This model represents Leonardo's attempt to design an astronomical -- or perhaps a calendar -- Clock. He apparently planned to set the main timing wheels in fixed ratio to each other, and to rotate them by balance weights and control them by friction heads. The idea was good, but the force needed to balance the weighted timing wheels and the friction heads was so great that the clock bacame impractical. - Dr. Roberto A. Guatelli
