Excerpted label text from the Curatorial Fellowship exhibition "Color in Containment," March 22 – April 29, 2018:
Stark fields of black and white can limit the presence of color, but less color in a composition doesn’t always limit its power over the viewer. Friedrich Meckseper’s Mechanical Rainbow is practically subterranean. The tri-color rainbow and mechanical gears glint from within a dense swath of darkness, buried beneath an abstract landscape rendered in monochrome. Color here is so contained as to nearly be snuffed out, yet that constraint is what pushes those primary hues of red blue and yellow forward to meet the viewer. The etching’s velvet black sinks to unknown depths, while the rainbow and its mechanized parts hover at the very edge of the picture plane. - Margaret Wilson (M.F.A.
