Label Text:
One of the most innovative parts of Avery’s emerging art practice was his series of Art/Medicine actions staged during the 1990s.

In 1993 he conceived of an immersive installation/action, initially planned for the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. This action, the first time Avery attempted to practice medicine in an art setting, was also staged in 1994 at the Mary Ryan Gallery in New York. Surrounded by printed wall paper based on the artist’s own blood smear (The Stuff of Life and Death) and hung with cast paper representations of the virus (HIV Condom Filled Piñata), Avery and other doctors performed HIV blood tests on a number of volunteers. The two smaller HIV sculptures were printed in 2015. At the time of the first action, condoms remained the best HIV prevention strategy.

Avery created the "baby" version of the HIV viruses as Christmas ornaments in 2015
