Label Text:
Roy Lichtenstein rose to prominence in the early 1960s. His paintings based on comic book figures are among the early works of Pop Art. The artist often explored similar subjects in his paintings and prints, although he saw the two media in very different terms.

Lichtenstein created two series of lithographs inspired by Claude Monet’s paintings: Haystacks and Cathedrals. In these works he transforms Monet’s impressionistic brushstrokes into exaggerated versions of the Benday dot, the small unit that makes up images in commercially printed works like comic books. He began a series of paintings of the same subjects the year before beginning the prints. He explained the difference during an interview in 1972: “My paintings [based on Monet’s work] use different views of [cathedrals and haystacks] as well as different colors; and they are paintings about printing…”
