Description:
A portrait of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan reclining on his throne above a richly decorated carpet as he looks out over a landscape of rolling green hills

Label Text:
The tradition of Mughal royal portrait painting reached its peak during the reign of Shah Jahan; this painting represents one of several formulae developed for such portraits - the emperor, in three quarter or profile view attired in rich textiles and adorned with jewels and/or ceremonial arms, is seated on a throne in a carpeted garden terrace; the symbolic imperial parasol and the halo are standard features in the iconic portrayals of the Mughal emperors; Shah Jahan's portrait, with its sensitively observed details of the aging emperor's face and its expansive landscape background, is the most inspired of the museum's group.
