Description:
unpainted, once polychromed, angel with long curly hair, flying robes and upswept wings holding a large candle with both hands; religion - Christian

Label Text:
Captured in dramatic flight, this angel, with his robe swirling around him, holds the base of a twisted column symbolic of the Flagellation, when Christ was tied to a column and whipped before being crucified. The angel originally was accompanied by other angels bearing symbols of the Passion (or sufferings) of Christ, all clustered around a large wooden crucifix. The whole would have formed an impressive altarpiece, carved in a style made popular in fifteenth-and sixteenth-century Germany by a master artist called Viet Stoss.
