Description:
What appears to be a sheath for a short scimiter, except that the hilt is just a plug for the open end, with no evidence of any blade. From Brastagi, northern Sumatra; collected 1938. Made of soft pine, stained black. The plug is surmounted by a hand carved figure of a man on horseback, with real hair glued and wired on. The sheath terminates in two seated figurines, one atop the other, the upper one with a long "cardinal's" hat. One side is decorated with very crude scratched geometrical figures. A dirty twisted red white and blue cord is attached for hanging up the sheath.
