Description:
Hamamatsu is no. 30 in the Fifty-three stations of the Tokaido series in the Hoeido edition. A party of travelers warming themselves by a bonfire beside a large tree: a traveler with pipe is looking on, a peasant woman carrying a child on her back. Bare, flat rice-field, across which stand the castle and village of Hamamatsu in the background. In more elaborate impressions, the edge of the billowing smoke is tinted a reddish brown at the base and embossed, as here.

Label Text:
Hiroshige made the Tōkaidō Road between Edo (modern) Tokyo) and Kyōto the subject of his most famous series. The road was maintained to allow the daimyō, the nobles who served the feudal Tokugawa shoguns, to travel easily back and forth from their homes to Edo, where they were forced to live half the year. But as the townspeople of Edo began to travel more, the various stations of the Tōkaidō took on the aspect of tourist destinations, and images of the famous spots were avidly collected.
