Description: ca. early 20th century plaster cast of a Pentelic marble original dating to the Archaic Period, ca. 510-500 BCE. This relief, found built into the Themistocleian Wall near the Dipylon and the Kerameikos cemetery in Athens, Greece, is one of three panels from the base of a funerary statue. Four male figures are depicted; the two in the center are engaged in a wrestling match. The man to the left stands leaning towards the athletes with both arms outstretched, perhaps ready to jump into the match. The man to the far right holds a long pole used for grooming the wrestling pit and leans away from the pair. The original marble relief after which this cast is made is located at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, Greece. Provenience: Themistocleian wall near Kerameikos, Greece, Athens (original)
