Description: Silver pocket watch with bold black roman numerals and arabic seconds, and stamped with "WELLS & DAY / GREENFIELD / MASS" on the face, and with a key and chain. The case is marked "RS" in an oval for Ralph Samuel and with the hallmarks of a leopard's head, lion passant and the date letter O" in gothic script for 1849-1850. Ralph Samuel registered his mark in Liverpool in 1838 and worked there until 1858 where he was known for making watch cases for most of the time from his shop on Wood Street in Liverpool. He registered his mark at the London and Chester Assay offices in 1843. Dexter Wells (1821-1849) was listed as a goldsmith when he married Rhoda Roberts (1823-1897) in Gill, Massachusetts, in 1844, and the partnership of Wells and Gay was advertised on December 23, 1848 in the Greenfield paper. .
