Oil on wood portrait of Southworth Howland (1775-1853) of West Brookfield, one of pair with his second wife Polly Ware Howland (HD 78.043) who married in 1816. Old Sturbridge Village has a portrait of Southward Allen Howland (1800-1882), the son of Southward Allen and his first wife, Esther Allen Howland (1780-1814), who married in 1799 and had seven children. Southworth and Polly had five children. The portraits were purchased by the donor from William W. Howland through his guardian, Rev. C.S. Wilder of Longmeadow in 1926, a year after they had also bought the portraits and other Howland family possessions found in an attic in Conway, Massachusetts. Southward Howland's possesions had been moved from Worcester where he had lived since 1843 to Conway shortly after his death in 1853. The grey-painted back has taped to the back some Howland family records of births and marriages, and one page from an unknown book with "Among the pilgrims who came to this Country, and landed at Plymouth in 1620, was John Howland" on the top of the page, a short biography of John Ware, and limited geneology which mentions Southworth's birth. John Howland (c.1591-1672/3) was a passenger on the Mayflower, who came as an indentured servant, signed the Mayflower Compact in 1620, and became freeman in 1621. Howland married fellow Mayflower passenger Elizabeth Tilley (d.1681), and together they had ten children and 88 grandchildren. The bust-length portrait depicts a man with long grey hair around 60 yr. with his head turned slightly to the left and eyes looking left at the viewer, wearing a black stock, white shirt and black coat.
