Description: Pewter mug with a "JM" on the side, attributed to Samuel Danforth (1774-1816) of Hartford, Connecticut, where he worked from December, 1795, until his death in 1816 producing his eagle-marked wares. Samuel was the youngest son of Thomas Jr. (1731-1782) of Middletown, Conn., who began the metalworking dynasty that put Danforth pewter on thousands of American tables. Samuel was a very successful pewterer, whose estate was valued at over $11,000 net when he died; however, the quality of his output was uneven. The mug has a beaded lip, scroll handle, and two incised bands 1/2" above the molded base.
