Description:
English delft circular plate with blue decoration, which descended in the family of Dr. Thomas Williams (1718-1775) of Deerfield. The plate is decorated overall (from edge to edge) with a chinoiserie garden scene with a flying insect, fretwork Chinese-style fence, large plants, pagoda-like building, large, curved rock outcropping, and foliate sprays, all encircled by a blue band around the rim edge. A similar but not identical plate owned by dealer Jonathan Howard is dated 1750 and the reverse of the dish is decorated with noughts and crosses or X and II in blue, as is often seen on Bristol wares of the period.
