Description:
English brownware (chocolate colored) jug with a straight collar, pinched spout, shaped handle, and baluster-shaped body with a flat base, which covered overall with yellow transfer prints with chinoiserie designs with pagoda and willows, and other Chinese stylized designs. In the past this type of yellow transfer-printed brown ware is sometimes referred to as "Portobello ware" and was associated with the Portobello Factory of Scotland - This ware was not made at the Portobello factory nor made in Scotland at all-- In fact, it is now thought to have produced by potters in Staffordshire and the Scott Brothers of Southwick Pottery in Sunderland. This style of decoration has been found on Dutch delft wares from around 1700, with dark brown grounds called "chocolate" and golden yellow chinoiserie decoration.
