Possibly made by John and Rebecca Lloyd, Shelton, Staffordshire, England, circa 1835-40. John Lloyd was a manufacturer of earthenware and porcelain figures at Shelton in Staffordshire, c.1834-50. From 1850-1852 John Lloyd's wife, Rebecca continued the works. Modeled as a brown- and black calico cat with an arched back and open red mouth, hissing at a white poodle with an iron-red mouth and a ‘lion clip’, emerging from his tan dog house applied with white ‘moss,’ on a rocky oblong base also applied with ‘moss’ and edged around the footrim in gilding. The doghouse is unglazed. Underside has label for "D. M. & P. Manheim Antiques Corp New York/ Guaranteed Genuine" and a paper label "7- Mar 82 -2/Rockingham Poodle/1828" (This piece has been misattributed to the Rockingham Factory.) The base is solid glazed porcelain with a small vent hole. Condition: Good, possibly with tiny chips on the ‘moss.’
