Description:
Photograph, portrait of James Wells Champney holding a pencil and sketchbook, inscribed in pencil below image: J.W. Champney. On the reverse of the photo is a pasted label for "J. Wells Champney." This is a studio image which could have been taken by Champney himself either in Deerfield or in New York City. Champney is dressed as he would be to go sketching out of doors, with a rain coat, hat, and his sketching equipment.
