Description:
Anti-slavery porcelain plate with shaped edge and relief molded scrolled decoration on the rim. The well of the plate decorated with a print of a seated African woman holding a child in her arms, taken from the "Third Report of the Female Society for Birmingham, West Bromwich, Wednesbury, Walsall, and their Respective Neighbourhoods, for the Relief of British Negro Slaves" (1828). The rim decorated with four printed inscriptions (two biblical quotes and two couplets): "I am oppressed undertake for me / Isaiah 38c14v," "I labour and have no rest / Lam. 5c5v," "As borrowed beams illume our way / And shed a bright and cheering ray," and "So Christian Light dispels the gloom / That shades poor Negro's hapless doom." Condition: Numerous black specks in the glaze.
