Description: English creamware oval stand with slightly scalloped rim and molded at opposite ends with a scroll and shell pattern, which was used to support a small tureen (tureen missing). The design for this rococo-shaped stand is evidently adapted from a Sevres porcelain tureen given by Louis XV to the Duchess of Bedford, wife of the British Ambassador, after the negotiation of the Treaty of Paris in 1763. In 1765, Josiah Wedgwood wrote to his partner Thomas Bentley: "I have been three Days hard & close at work takeing pattns, from a set of French China at the Duke of Bedford's, worth at least L1500, the most elegant things I ever saw, & am this evening to wait & be waited upon by designers, modellers &c."
