Description:
One of two broadside-type Family Registers of the Powers family from central Massachusetts, which were inscribed on a printed form titled "FAMILY REGISTER" published by "PHELPS AND CLARK, PRINTERS, GREENFIELD, MASS." These broadsides composed with letterpress type could be readily reporduced for several members of a family. They were probably executed by small printing shops, itinerant printers, or in several cases, by family members known to be in the printing trade. D. Brenton Simons and Peter Benes illustrate an almost identical broadside family register as HD's example, which was issued by Hiram Ferry of Northampton, Massachusetts, circa 1827-1828. This Register has oval portraits of a woman and man over three columns with spaces for "Mr. / Miss," "Married," and "Died." The Register is inscribed in ink with the names of Edward Powers (1754-1830) and his first wife, Priscilla Curtis (1756-1808) of Petersham, Massachusetts, who married in 1778, and his second wife, Lydia Knapp (1761-1849) of Phillipston, Massachusetts, who married in 1808. Under Born/Died, five children are listed: Sally Powers (1779-1860), Oliver Powers (1781-1859), Sylvia Powers (1785-1856), Priscilla Powers (1789-1864), and Edward Powers (1794-1841); over the dates for Edward and his two wives. See HD 2004.30.2 for the Family Register of Oliver Powers.
