Description: Pair of knitted cotton stockings. In 1820 Nathaniel Robinson (1783-1864) established a factory in Pawlet (Rutland County), Vermont for the mechanized spinning of cotton fibers into yarn suitable for knitting and weaving. These stockings, along with a pair of gloves (2001.9.4), are thought to be the first items woven with yarn spun from the factory, a testament the new republic's self-sufficiency.
