Description: Pair of writs-length knitted cotton gloves. In 1820 Nathaniel Robinson (1783-1864) established a factory in Pawlet (Rutland County), Vermont for the mechanized spinning of cotton fibers into yarn suitable for knitting and weaving. These gloves, along with a pair of stockings (HD 2001.9.5), are thought to be the first items woven with yarn spun from the factory, a testament the new republic's self-sufficiency.
