The god Krishna is celebrated for his delectable flute playing, which entrances all who hear it. In this painting by a female artist from rural Bihar, the blue-skinned deity plays his song beneath a curling, leaf-studded bough. Although produced in large part for touristic consumption, the image bears traces of the original ritual function of Mithila painting. The artist, for example, saved the task of executing the eyes—the primary means by which the devotee beholds (and is beheld by) the divine—for last. It is with this final, consecrating act that she brings Krishna to life.
