As was often the case with bijinga (prints of beauties), Shunchō’s original work showcases kimono styles and patterns that were popular in the last quarter of the eighteenth century. Indeed, many Edo-period textile designers commissioned prints to promote their new wares. With his addition, Binnie has masterfully matched both the color of the now-faded paper and also Shunchō’s original intent: to highlight the latest in eighteenth-century fashion, in this case a Rococo French gown and towering powdered wig, emphasized in bright, aniline colors that, like European fashion, would later be imported into Japan.
