Label Text:
Nickle’s work was included in the Museum of Modern Art’s defining 1961 exhibition The Art of the Assemblage, which popularized that term and brought to the fore contemporary artists working in mixed media. Like Stankiewicz’s Machine People nearby, Nickle’s collages and assemblages blurred the divide between high and low culture by incorporating found, often discarded objects, such as safety pins, into his carefully contained, abstract works.
