Braque based this lithograph on a large oil painting he completed in 1956, one of many in his postwar series of “Studio” paintings. In the early decades of the twentieth century, he played a major role in Cubism’s development. The Echo, from his late period, makes use of certain key elements in the Cubist vocabulary, such as a geometric layout, dense composition, flat overlapping planes, and bits of text. In this still life, however, the ascetic angular forms of early Cubism are rounded, while blocks of vibrant color model the objects’ shapes, including the centrally positioned jug and the horizontally spread red cloth that anchors the floating arrangement.
Braque recycles familiar elements such as the jug and newspaper clippings (L’Echo, a Parisian daily, first showed up in one of his collages in 1913), while newly integrating the flying bird theme, which entered his repertoire only after the Second World War.
