Label Text: Grigori, who now openly claims to be Dimitri, has made his way to Sandomir Castle in Poland, where he hopes to court and win the powerful Marina Mnishek.
Musorgskii inserted this scene in the 1872 version to meet the requirement of the directorate of the Imperial Theaters, which called for the addition of a female role and a scene to contain it. The main character in this scene is Marina Mniszech, the daughter of a local Polish governor.
Dobuzhinskii evokes the dominance of the Roman Catholic faith in Poland by decorating the room with spiraled columns between the windows. They refer to the Baroque era, the art of which was closely related to the Catholic Church. In this massive architecture Marina appears small, sitting in a chair on the left side. BJ
