Hammond creates art works by drawing exclusively from a group of 276 images and symbols culled from a variety of sources, such as children's books, medical illustration, knot diagrams, and phrenology charts. Phrenology, referenced in the imagery in this painting, is a pseudo-science in which the contours of a person's skull, thought to reflect the relative sizes of different parts of the brain, are interpreted to provide information about personality.
Each image in Hammond's "lexicon," kept in her studio as paper cutouts, Xerox copies, and more, is assigned a number. The title of this painting reflects a convention that she used consistently from 1987-1993. The string of numbers in parentheses names each piece of imagery incorporated into the painting--this painting, then, is comprised of three parts, the images numbered one, zero, and five.
