Label Text: Chekhov’s story The House with the Mezzanine is a tale of lost love. The story’s protagonist and narrator is a landscape painter who spends his summer in the country, often visiting his neighbors—two sisters and their mother—who live in the house with the mezzanine. The print shows the protagonist and the younger of the two sisters, the affectionate and gentle Zhenia, who evokes his tender feelings: “Zhenia came, carrying a basket. […] We gathered mushrooms and talked, and whenever she asked me a question she stood in front of me to see my face.”
Vassiliev’s inscription on the lower right reads: “This series of images is based on my reading of Chekhov’s story and presents a dialogue of the artist and Chekhov.” BJ 2013
