Description:
From "Drawing Book in Imitation of Chalk"

Label Text:
Benjamin Green ranks as one of the earliest English engravers to use the technique of soft-ground etching—a medium that captures the appearance of chalk drawings. Green’s position as engraver to the University of Oxford provided opportunities to share the technique with other artists, including Gainsborough and Stubbs.

In this print, Green shows an excursion to Stonehenge made by the antiquarian Francis Grose, who published an engraved version of the scene in his Antiquities of England and Wales (1773–1776). Whereas the massive figures and powerful contrasts in black and white heighten the drama of Green’s print after Stubbs, the diminutive tourists and sepia-colored ink of Green’s print after Grose suit its measured mood.
