Description: book illustration; fūzoku-ga
Label Text: This print is signed "Yamato eshi Nishikawa Sukenobu hitsu" ('Painted by the Yamato Artist Nishikawa Sukenobu'). Sukenobu was a book illustrator and no known single-sheet prints of his exist. Another copy of this print, with applied coloring, is held at the British Museum (acc. no. 1907,1018,0.235). It is possible that this print comes from a copy of the album known as the "Nishikawa Onna Ezukushi," which contains signed sheets illustrating the daily activities and customs of courtesans. Such pictures, known as fūzoku-ga, were a specialty of the artist, who also executed some historical and erotic compositions.
