Description: horizontal ōban; musha-e; nishiki-e; yoko-e
Label Text: The title of this print and the series to which it belongs are printed vertically descending at top-right within a red cartouche. The print is signed at lower-right "Hiroshige ga' ('drawn by Hiroshige'). While there are no other identifying marks, it is knowns that Izumiya Ichibei published this series ca. 1836. The "Part Six" of the title likely refers to part six of act XI of the kabuki play "The Storehouse of Loyal Retainers," in which the loyal samurai plot and undertake a nighttime attack to avenge the death of their master. Other prints from the series are occasionally labeled with both the scene and the act from which it is taken. This print also exhibits Hiroshige's skill with the bokashi gradient effect and his enthusiasm for the "berurin ai" (literally 'Berlin blue'), the Japanese name for the imported Prussian blue pigment.
