Considered one of the earliest nonconformist Soviet artists, Masterkova forged an entirely personal form of abstraction, which disregarded the prescribed aesthetic of legible Socialist Realism. Masterkova’s compositions, often produced in series and incorporating collage elements, teetered between mysticism and lyricism. In TRIPTYCH 7 A, made a few years after Masterkova emigrated to Paris, she created palpable tension through the interplay of the dark color palette and the contrasting patterns between linear rhythmic cut-out paper on the one hand, and encircled flowing India ink on the other.
