Description: from "Dorothy Norman: Selected Photographs, A Photographic Collection of the Artist's Works from 1932-1952"
Label Text: In this photograph, Norman captures the animated, wide-eyed expression of Luise Rainer. A successful actress in her native Germany and Austria before she signed a contract with MGM, Rainer earned the nickname “The Viennese Teardrop” for a moving scene in The Great Ziegfeld and was the first actress to win two Academy Awards in consecutive years, 1936 and 1937.
One of Alfred Stieglitz’s later protégés, Norman demonstrated an eloquent understanding of light and shadow, although she did not consider herself a professional photographer. The small size of her prints conveys their personal nature—also a writer and activist, Norman mainly photographed people and places meaningful to her.
