Label Text: Born in St. John's, Newfoundland, Maurice Brazil Prendergast spent his youth in Boston. Studying in Paris in the 1890s, he was witness to dramatic and revolutionary changes taking place in the art world. Prendergast found inspiration in the work of Edouard Manet, James McNeill Whistler, Paul Cézanne, Edouard Vuillard, Pierre Bonnard, and, later, Henri Matisse.
Returning to American, Prendergast became a member of The Eight. He was an independent thinker known for his vivid palette and staccato brush; he depicted the leisurely activities of the middle class in the city and country. While his watercolors evoke an idyllic world filled with dappled sunlight and lighthearted crowds, Prendergast did explore the working-class with dock scenes of Boston and New York.
