In this photograph, the Hungarian dancer and cabaret performer Magda Förstner contorts her body in an exaggerated dance-like pose in spontaneous response to the nearby sculpture by István Beöthy, a fellow Hungarian émigré in whose Paris studio André Kertész took this photograph. Förstner and Kertész’s shared interest in experimenting with form and Kertész’s attention to geometry make this photograph decidedly “modern.” Kertész moved from his native Hungary to Paris in 1925 (and immigrated to the United States in 1936). His Paris-era photographs often evoke contemporary international artistic movements, such as Dada, and feature city scenes, fellow immigrant artists—as in this photograph—and other prominent artists of the day. Satiric Dancer also suggests the bodily distortion that Kertész later explored in depth in his Distortions series, using fun-house mirrors.
