Description:
This study for a large painting depicts the death of Gerald Penny, a first-year African American student at Amherst College who drowned taking a swimming test at the school in 1973. The background is divided in half from the upper left corner to the bottom right corner. On the left, two men are helping to lift the body out of the water to two other men helping at the side of the pool.
