This painting is likely about the presidential race of 1896 between William McKinley (Republican) and Jennings Bryan (Democrat). During a time of great economic depression, the big issue ("the first big issue in 30 years," according to Henry Steele Commager's standard American History text) was the debate over keeping the gold standard. Bryan delivered the famous "Cross of Gold" speech proposing to end the gold standard, to reform of the monetary system, and to issue government relief to farmers and others hurt by the depression.
