Label Text:
This work is the official engraving, ordered by Napoleon, after Gros's celebrated 1796 painting portraying the general as the conquering hero at the Battle of Arcole (Versailles, Musée national du Château). The image marks the beginning of the pictorial legend of Napoleon. Acting as intermediary, Josephine was in several instances the critical contact for artists who were given important commissions by Napoleon. Such is the case with Gros, whose reputation was built on his contributions to the Napoleonic epic. His General Bonaparte Visiting the Pesthouse at Jaffa (Musée du Louvre) of 1804, another landmark picture, was commissioned directly by Josephine
