Label Text:
Benjamin Smith was one of four brothers who specialized in the publication of city views from 1848 to 1855. The brothers traveled up and down the East Coast and westward to Ohio, Missouri, and Kentucky, making views and obtaining subscribers for them. Most of them were lithographed in Philadelphia, New York, and Boston by the best printers, but this view of Brooklyn is a steel-plate engraving by William Wellstood and Henry Peters. Engraving large prints required a great amount of time and skill. Additionally, each impression from the plate was individually inked and printed, creating relatively expensive images. This view shows Brooklyn from the west, with the bustling East River in the foreground.
