Everett Shinn, a member of The Eight, launched his career as an artist-reporter in Philadelphia while studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. It is here that he met William Glackens, George Luks, and John Sloan, with whom he shared an interest in portraying contemporary life. Working quickly with colorful pastels, Shinn depicted life among both the "upper crust" and the working class.
