Description: miniature; mourning scene on verso
Label Text: The reverse of this portrait miniature, commissioned on the occasion of the sitter's promotion to the rank of captain, shows a man and a woman mourning at a monument bearing the initials of three deceased family members: the sitter's mother and his infant children, Ann and Fergus. Chopped hair, presumably from McRee family members, has been applied to lend texture to the foreground vignette of a rosebush.
