Framed oil portrait (artist unknown) of the silversmith Benjamin Ely Cook (1803-1900) of Northampton, Massachusetts, wearing a white cravat and shirt and black coat in a broad wooden frame in good condition (has been conserved), which was acquired from Reginald French and originally came from the estate of Cook's son, Capt. (USN) Frank Cook of Northampton. The son of Dr. George W. Cook and Margaret Teller Cook of Hyde Park, New York, Benjamin E. Cook married Elizabeth Christine Griffin in 1827 in Hudson, NY, where he was apprenticed to her father, Isaiah Griffin (1777-1863); he also worked for Abram Fellows & Co. in Troy, NY. In 1827, Cook moved to Northampton, Massachusetts, where he worked on Shop Row in partnership with Nathan Storrs (1768-1839) between 1827 and 1833; by himself from 1833-1858; and with his son, Benjamin E. Cook, Jr., as B. E. Cook & Son from 1858-1900.
