“Ginbura” was not just a phenomenon of the 1930s. The Ginza remains Tokyo’s preeminent shopping street, lined with department stores and luxury shops. In the early 1970s African American music and culture became popular in Japan. Young men would get their hair set in dramatic Afros to display their cultural sophistication as they walked along the Ginza.
