Homer’s The War for the Union, 1862—A Cavalry Charge, published in the July 5, 1862, issue of Harper’s Weekly, presents an eruption of ceaseless energy and movement. While Homer based most of his images of the war on direct observation, he derived this composition almost entirely from conventions of artistic propaganda dating back to Napoleon’s military campaigns. Because the Union cavalry consisted mostly of farmers and city dwellers who possessed little, if any, experience commanding swift horses, this image of martial might idealizes Union coordination and preparedness as means of projecting inevitable victory.
