Label Text:
This drawing is somber and meditative; the soft play of light in a darkened room is delicately handled in the sitter’s complex facial expression. To create this image, Haskell balanced dense but nuanced shadows with pristine paper. He applied layers of thin washes to attain the deep blacks that are so integral to this composition. In the white bow around the woman’s neck, one can see the evidence of reductive modeling. Haskell may have revealed the paper underneath already-painted areas using a soft rubber eraser or small sponge.
