Description:
Fragments of this pattern have been found at the Boston and Sandwich Factory site. On November 5, 1825, the sloar book records that John Snowden made 84 "chiveral" (probably chevron) salts on foot at $.05 each, which may be like this piece. Sackett and Lane, merchants in troy, New York, ordered twenty dozen blue chiveral salts on September 5, 1826. The next week, on September 12, Thomas D. Moore, of New York, wrote to Deming Jarves: "You can send me 1 or 2 small packages of Blue chiveral salts." and sent another order form on August 30, 1826 (letters to Jarves are in the Sandwich Historical Society, Sandwich, MA: see Your Obdt. Servt, p. 42 [Moore letter]. Cobalt blue glass, blown three mold (McKearin pattern G.III-25), circular bowl, widest at top, bulbous body, heavy pedestal and foot, mold blow in six panels, sunbursts alternating with diamond diapering; herringbone pattern on pedestal and foot; underside of foot molded in a ringed pattern; pontil mark; nice wear pattern on foot rim. Condition: small chip on rim of salt. Colored examples of blown three mold wares are extremely rare. Typed white label on base of salt reads: “Glass Room/#109/Cobalt Blue/Salt”. White painted number “109” on base of object on pontil mark.
