Description:
One of a pair of silver rococo candlesticks (see HD 84.036) with a wide upturned flange, elaborate stem, square, raised shell base, and the cast sections sodered together, which is marked "EC" in roman letters for Ebenezer Coker (d.1783) and the date letter "I" for 1764 on the corner, and "M" on the underside of the base. This set appears to have been made from the same model as another set by Coker made in 1768, HD 84.034-84.035. Coker was apprenticed to Joseph Smith in 1728, which he completed in 1740. Registering his first mark in 1738 and several thereafter, he specialized in salvers and candlesticks; he was declared bankrupt in 1781 and died destitute in 1783
