Description:
Two silver-plated candlesticks (unmarked) with bell-shaped tops that can be elongated, which are also known as telescopic candlesticks. The round weighted bases are decorated with a relief band of leaves, flowers, and shells and a small band of gadrooning around the top of the base; iron discs are sodered to the bottom. The number "3" is stamped inside one candle cup, and a plant form is stamped inside the other cup. Geoffrey Wells says that Sheffield plate telescopic candlesticks were made with one or more sliding sections, and were the subject of patents from the end of the 18th century onwards. These were bought by Miss Emma Lewis Coleman (1853-1942) at the Colin McCrea sale in Camden, South Carolina, in 1901.
