Description: Silver, bulbous-bodied cann marked twice "I.Cowell" in script in a rounded rectangle left of the handle for John Cowell (1707-1731+), and engraved with an unidentified device (over earlier initials?) and the initials "I / TM" on the scrolled handle with its flat furl on top and heavy baluster-type drop under the top of the handle. John Cowell, son of silversmith William Cowell, Sr. (1682-1736), first advertised in Boston in 1728; since there is no further documentary evidence about him after 1731, he may have died before his father since there is no mention of him in his father's will. This is the only known example of his work. Drinking vessels with a bulbous shape and without lids were popular in the colonies from the 1720s to around 1800; canns varied little in shape other than in their handles, which tended to be double-scrolled starting in the mid 1700s. Wgt. 11 1/2 ozs., 9 dwts., 3 grs.
