Description:
Silver baluster-shaped caster with a separate, rounded and pierced cover, urn-shaped body supported on a short stem ending in a beaded band, and a rectangular base, which is marked "REVERE" in a rectangle for Paul Revere, Jr. (1734-1818) and engraved "EW / to / EW" in script on the lower body This caster, which was purchased the from the Williams family, and caster, HD 57.279, have histories of ownership in different branches of the Williams family of Deerfield. They both have the same "EW" initials common in the family (e.g. Elijah, Elizabeth, etc.); a third Williams family caster also marked "REVERE" is known and is still retained in the family. HD also has a cann (HD 64.245) by Samuel Minott (1732-1803) marked with the same initials, and the Harvard University Art Museum has several other examples of silver pieces made by Revere and marked with Williams family initials. Casters were often used for sugar and other dry condiments at table.
